Hexagram 43 · Breakthrough (夬 Guài)

Hexagram 43 glyph

Lake over Heaven

The lake swollen above the open sky · waters gathered to the point of breaking

Breakthrough is the hexagram of decisive resolution — the moment when a long-building strength is finally ready to break through a stubborn last obstacle. Five strong lines press up against a single weak one at the top, an image of accumulated power about to clear away what remains. It speaks to that point where a problem can no longer be tolerated and must be confronted head-on. The energy is forceful and forward, but the figure warns repeatedly that how you break through matters as much as that you do.

Lake rides above Heaven, water swollen high over the open sky, brimming to the very edge of overflow. The image is of pent-up pressure on the brink of release, a cloudburst about to fall. That single yielding line at the crown is the weakness — a bad habit, a falsehood, a corrupt influence — that the gathered strength beneath is poised to expel. The hexagram captures the charged instant before the dam gives way, when resolve becomes action.

What this hexagram counsels in a reading

When you draw this, the counsel is to confront the matter openly and resolve it for good. Name the problem plainly, in the light, rather than scheming against it in the dark — the resolution must be honest, never violent or sly. Make your case where others can see it and act with firm determination. But the gravest warning is turned inward: guard against your own excess. Righteous zeal easily tips into harshness or recklessness, and a breakthrough achieved by force or pride sows the seeds of its own undoing.

In love and relationships

This figure points to a truth that can no longer go unspoken — a grievance, a deception, a pattern that has to end. The work is to bring it into the open honestly rather than let resentment fester or strike in anger. Say the hard thing plainly and fairly, without cruelty or manipulation. A clean, candid reckoning can clear the air and renew the bond; a breakthrough driven by spite only deepens the wound.

In work and money

Professionally, this is the moment to deal decisively with a lingering problem — a failing arrangement, an untrustworthy associate, an issue everyone has avoided naming. Address it transparently and firmly, with the facts on the table, not through backroom maneuvering. With money, it may mean cutting a loss or ending a draining commitment outright. Resolve cleanly, share rather than hoard your advantage, and stay wary of overconfidence; reckless force at the finish can wreck a sound decision.

Moving lines and the changing hexagram

A moving line in Breakthrough usually concerns the manner of the decisive act — whether you advance with steady, principled resolve or rush ahead, alone and overbold, into danger. These lines repeatedly weigh firmness against rashness and warn how easily the strong overreach. The hexagram it changes into shows where the resolution leads: a clean new order when the break is made justly, or fresh trouble when the breakthrough is forced without care.

Its Tarot kin

Breakthrough finds its Tarot echo in The Tower, the card of sudden, clearing upheaval. The Tower topples what was unsound in a single decisive stroke, sweeping away a structure that could no longer stand — much like the strength here expelling the weak line at the top. Both mark a necessary break with what has outlived its truth. The lesson of each is that some things must fall completely before something honest can take their place.
