Hexagram 55 · Abundance (豐 Fēng)

Hexagram 55 glyph

Thunder over Fire

Movement crowning brilliance · the sun blazing at its zenith

Abundance is the hexagram of fullness at its height — the moment of plenty, achievement, and brilliance when everything is as ripe as it will get. It carries a real glow of success, but folded inside it is a sober truth: the sun stands highest only at noon, and noon does not linger. This is greatness arrived, and greatness that has, by its very nature, already begun its turn. The figure asks you to inhabit the peak fully while quietly knowing it is a peak.

Thunder rolls above and Fire burns below: stirring power married to clarity and light. Movement and brightness together make a moment of dazzling force — clear sight paired with the energy to act on what is seen. The classic image is of the noonday sun flooding everything with light, the point of maximum illumination. But the same image warns you, because what climbs to its zenith must come down. Fullness this complete is luminous and brief, and the wise meet it with both gladness and awareness.

What this hexagram counsels in a reading

Fēng tells you the favourable peak is here, so use it well and use it now. While clarity and energy align, decide the matters that need deciding and settle what has been hanging — judgment is sharpest in this strong light. Enjoy the abundance and share it generously rather than clutching at it. At the same time, hold the truth lightly that such heights pass; do not be dismayed when the brightness begins to wane. Make the most of the moment without expecting it to be permanent, and you cannot be caught off guard.

In love and relationships

This shines on a relationship at a high, warm point — closeness, celebration, a bond at its fullest. Savour it openly and let your gratitude show. The gentle reminder is not to take the glow for granted or assume it sustains itself untended; even golden times move through seasons. Bring matters into the open while the warmth is strong and the air is clear, and the fullness becomes something you can carry forward rather than merely look back on.

In work and money

A career or venture stands at its zenith — recognition, results, momentum all converging. Act boldly while conditions favour you; resolve outstanding decisions and press your advantage in the strong light. With money, this can mark real prosperity, but it counsels using the surplus wisely and generously rather than assuming the peak is permanent. Make hay while the sun is high, and prepare quietly for the natural turn that follows every summit.

Moving lines and the changing hexagram

A moving line in Abundance often marks how you are handling the peak — whether you make full, clear use of it or let arrogance, hesitation, or a creeping shadow dim the light. Read it as a note on your conduct at the height rather than a fixed outcome. The hexagram it changes into shows where the fullness is heading as noon passes, and what remains once the brightest moment has begun, inevitably, to wane.

Its Tarot kin

In the deck, Abundance rhymes with The Sun. Both are images of brilliance at full strength — warmth, clarity, success that lights everything around it. The Sun is joy and vitality at their most radiant; Fēng is that same noonday blaze, plenty and clear sight at their peak. Each invites you to stand fully in the light while it shines, generous and awake, knowing such brightness is a gift to be used.
